Abstract : The overall objective of this program is the investigation of suitable organic and semi-organic polymers to serve as base resins for thermally stable adhesive systems. The synthesis of polyphenylene by conventional means and by a catalyzed Wurtz-Fitting reaction, as well as by modifications of the Wurtz-Fitting reaction, are described. The Wurtz-Fitting reaction employed in the synthesis of polyphenylene can be catalyzed by the use of small amounts of compounds which contain active hydrogen. Reaction rates are appreciably faster, the yield is unaffected, and the reaction can be safely carried out in higher concentrations than conventional WurtzFitting reactions. Nitrogen-containing polymers are obtained when attempting to synthesize polyphenylenes by the Wurtz-Fitting reaction catalyzed by certain amines. The addition of N,N-dimethylaniline, N,N-diethyl-3-aminopropylamine, or mixtures of the two is effective in increasing reaction rates, but these compounds or fragments thereof become integrally bound in the structure of the polymer. The synthesis of polyphenylene with reactive functional groups seems feasible. (Author)
