Abstract : A program is described for computing acoustic ray trajectories and travel times in the ocean on the ERA 1101 computer at the Center. The program allows for approximating the vertical velocity profile in the water by 64 linear segments. The bottom profile of the ocean can be approximated by 14 linear segments. A different vertical velocity profile in the water may be used for each linear bottom segment. A sample calculation is shown which was used to interpret one of the experiments performed in the Ligurian Sea. Satisfactory agreement with observed travel times from explosive sources was obtained with the use of Wilson's formulas relating sound velocity to temperature, pressure and salinity of the water.
