Abstract : The Type IV camera pod was evaluated for adaptation to the A-1E aircraft. Flight tests to evaluate camera pod steadiness were flown with the pod mounted on the No. 3 outboard station, the left inboard station, and the centerline station. After confirmation of minimal pod and camera vibration on these three stations, additional flight tests were conducted to photograph the projectory and impact of various types of ordnance released from the camera pod test aircraft. The camera pod photographic coverage of ordnance delivery was accomplished with forward and aft facing, 16mm, Milliken DB-5 motion picture cameras. The Type IV camera pod was successfully tested to obtain chase aircraft photography of ordnance delivery from other aircraft. Camera depression angles and lens focal length varied, depending on the photographic coverage requirement for different types of ordnance delivery. The standard armament system wiring on the test A-1E aircraft was augmented to facilitate automatic camera operation when any one of the three ordnance release circuits was activated. The Type IV camera pod produces acceptable aerial motion picture photography when mounted on either the No. 3 or No. 4 wing stations or an inboard pylon station on the A-1E aircraft. (Author)
