Abstract : A single crystal formulation of Bi sub (3-2y) x Ca sub 2y x V sub y x Fe sub (5-y) x O sub 12 for y = 1.2 has been optimized in which good yield and quality of crystals were obtained. Firing temperature schedules have been established for polycrystalline Y sub (3-2x) x Ca sub 2x x V sub x x Fe sub (5-x) x O sub 12 and Bi sub (3-2y) x Ca sub 2y x V sub y x Fe sub (5-y) x O sub 12 from x = 0.5 to x = 1.5 and from y = .7 to y = 1.5. Detailed data on the different formulations and the different processes tried are contained in the report, together with an analysis of the most important parameters which determine the quality of the finished material. A summary of the results of previous investigations on garnets containing pentavalent vanadium is presented for background information. (Author)
