Abstract : The induction period associated with the polymerization of A-5 was measured for redox systems consisting of copper sulfate coupled with several sulfinates, thiosulfinates and a sulfoxylate. Sodium benzene sulfinate was more effective than other aromatic sulfinates. Introduction of a nitro group into the aromatic ring of sodium benzene sulfinate eliminated the reducing property associated with the unsubstituted sulfinic acid. On an equimolar basis, sodium benzene thiosulfonate was found to initiate polymerization faster than sodium benzene sulfinate. Sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate, an aliphatic sulfinic acid, although more effective than sodium benzene thiosulfonate in the presence of cupric ions, showed the disadvantage of initiating polymerization in the absence of the metal ions. A formulation incorporating a copper diethanolamine complex, sodium benzene sulfinate and monomer was applied as a coated layer to a nesa glass support. A coating consisting of polyacrylic acid formed in insoluble polymer by electropolymerization. Monomer coatings using gelatin as the binder and an anionic surfactant, sodium sulfate derivative of 7-4thyl2-methyl- 4-undecanol (Tergitol-4 Union Carbide) as the electrochemical catalyst, formed a polymer by electrolysis. Thinner monomer coatings generally produced higher photocurrents in the sandwich arrangement. (Author)
