Abstract : This report develops the normal surface traction, normal surface displacement relations for a compliant layer adhering securely to a firm, flat foundation. Exact displacement responses are obtained for the one-dimensional (line) normal stress kernel and for the one-dimensional stress 'patch' or double step. A stable approximate differential equation is derived relating traction and displacement. This differential equation can be conveniently coupled with Reynolds equation to solve problems in compliant surface lubrication. (Author)
