Abstract : A method is established for predicting the damping matrix and hence the energy dissipation of a composite system containing nonlinear damping for any particular amplitude, mode shape and frequency. This is achieved from a knowledge of the damping properties of each nominally different component of that system, and by using the simplest mathematical concepts. The method is tested on a specimen structure containing five nominally identical component structures. From tests on another specimen which represents one of these components, the damping matrix and hence energy dissipation of the large structure is predicted. The predicted values are found to be in good agreement with those measured experimentally. In addition, a method for directly mmeasuring the damping matrix of a system with nonlinear damping and any number of degrees of freedom is outlined. (Author)
