Abstract : The use of omega acrylamidocaproic acid as the monomer in photoelectropolymerizable coatings containing, in addition, sodium benzene sulfinate, Cu-diethanolamine complex, and gelatin overcame the undesirable hardening reaction experienced with other monomers. The coating on an Al foil as anode was sandwiched with a ZnO resin coating on Nesa glass as cathode. An image-wise exposure to a W lamp was made while a potential was applied to the electrodes. Washout of the coating left a resist image. The photographic speed of such a photoelectropolymerizable composition is comparable to that of most photopolymerizable compositions containing this monomer. Rose Bengal and Eosin Y were found to be better sensitizing dyes for ZnO than Chlorophyll and Patent Blue A. The photoelectrocoloration process was operable with ZnO coatings sandwiched with coatings containing selected ether compounds. A study of sandwich current-voltage characteristics showed the one consisting of ZnO on Nesa coated glass and a binder coating on Al to be a non-linear resistor with much rectification during light exposure.
