Abstract : Polymorphism of CdS was studied in the pressure-temperature range from 1 to 100 kbars and 0 - 800 C using hydrostatic and opposed anvil apparatuses. CdS prepared by various methods was used as a starting material. However, only CdS precipitated from chloride solutions produced a quenchable rock salt structure phase. Interpretation of results with other starting materials was based on x-ray diffraction, color and other characteristics. The resultant phase diagram has a triple point at 16.5 plus or minus kb and 435 plus or minus 5 C between the wurtzite, rock salt and a new high pressure, high temperature phase presumably with the type B23 structure. Resistance measurements were made on these 3 CdS polymorphs with varying temperatures or pressures. The resistivity discontinuities associated with the crossing of phase boundaries agreed closely with the boundaries determined by the static methods. This pressure-temperature study was extended into and is consistent with results in the binary system MnS-CdS. (Author)
