Abstract : The first Submersible Test Unit (STU I-1) emplaced on the ocean floor on 29 March 1962 had evaded all recovery attempts for almost three years. The relatively long exposure duration of the STU's engineering materials specimens made its recovery highly desirable. The positioning of the STUduring its original emplacement constituted the major problem in the recovery of the STU. The positioning system used during the successful recovery cruise is described. Three grappling techniques utilized during the search cruise are described. The methods used to pinpoint the STU's bottom location and to physically retrieve it to the surface are explained in detail. (Author)
