Abstract : Some of the viscoelastic properties of aqueous solutions of polyethylene oxide were studied using a torsional pendulum method in the low audio frequency range. Measurement of the decay constant and the changes in resonant frequency of the mechanical oscillator pendulum due to mechanical loading caused by contact with the solutions permitted calculation of the components of the complex viscosity (or complex shear modulus). Comparison is made with viscosity determinations from rotating spindle and capillary tube viscometers. A relaxation in the viscoelastic properties is observed in this frequency range which cannot be described by a simple Maxwell model. This behavior suggests that a distribution of relaxation frequencies will be required to give an adequate description of the viscoelastic properties in these solutions. (Author)
