Abstract : No theory adequately describes the reflection of a finite amplitude shock wave off a non-rigid surface. The amount of energy absorbed by the shock reflecting surface was experimentally determined by the use of decigram charges of high explosive and photographs of the resulting shock wave. It was found that a 1/4 inch thick steel plate absorbed 57 + or - 10% of the incident energy. Water, with a seven millimeter height of burst, absorbs 87 + or - 15%. Procedure was checked by finding percentage difference of energy absorption between steel and water which came out to be 67 + or - 3%. This agrees favorably with the individual values which indicate a difference of 66 + or - 23%. (Author)
