Abstract : The electromagnetic fields diffracted by a two-dimensional perfectly conducting wedge are calculated for impulse and unit-step plane wave excitations, and for TE and TM polarizations. The time-dependent solutions obtained are in closed form. Contours of the field component parallel to the edge of the wedge are plotted for unit-step excitation using different wedge angles and different angles of incidence, and for both polarizations. ''Short time'' approximations of the fields in the time domain are compared with asymptotic expansions of the far field in the frequency domain. A method for approximating the fields diffracted by a wedge is developed by redefining the incident field on one side of the wedge and calculating the currents on the surface by the geometrical optics approximation. The currents thus calculated are compared with the exact currents for impulse and unit-step excitations. (Author)
