Abstract : The only detectable emission from discharged oxygen was a band system at 7619A. However, when a film of mercuric oxide was interposed between the discharge and the observation position, the intensity of this band was greatly enhanced and addiitional bands were observed at 6340A, 7030A and at 12,700A, in agreement with the findings of Bader and Ogryzlo. A linear relationship, however, was found between the intensities at 6340A and at 12,700A. Photolysis of CO2 was studied at 1470A. Although CO and O2 were the only stable products, the CO/O ratios were higher than those required for mass balance. The result of a number of experiments showed that the missing O2 was probably caused by adsorption of O atoms on the walls. A decrease in the quantum yields with increasing temperature and a decrease in O2 yield when CO was added suggested the occurrence of the back reaction. The overall quantum yield was found to be 0.35 at 25 C. Experiments with added H2 and CH4 indicated that O(1D) atoms have appreciable lifetimes in this system. (Author)
