Abstract : An error analysis has been performed for a 16-element circular directive array. The array is used as a despun directional antenna for synchronous altitude satellites. The deterioration of the radiation pattern is determined for amplitude failure of the elements and for random aperture illumination phase errors. The change in the on-axis gain caused by unequal power distribution to the individual elements is also determined. A peak phase error of 34 deg, along with a random phase error distribution, provides a mean drop in directivity of 0.5 dB with a standard deviation of 0.1 dB. Failure of any element whereby the amplitude becomes zero results in a mean change of directivity of -0.2 + or - 0.1 dB (peak). If the power to the failed element is absorbed in a termination, the mean change in effective radiated power is -0.5 dB. An average error of 23 percent in the power dividers for an antenna corporate feed system produces a change in gain of 0.25 dB. The statistical analysis of antenna arrays is treated in a general way. The analysis can be applied to any type of phased arrays. (Author)
