Abstract : This study is connected with the methods of measuring the sound velocity or elastic constants of small samples. Several techniques are considered. The sample size is less than 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2 inch. Methods of measuring the elasticity of thin films are considered. Methods of estimating the elastic constants from experiments performed on powder are discussed. Detailed discussions and conclusions are made for: (1) ultrasonic propagation of sound; (2) infrared reflection; (3) resonance of bars; (4) resonance of small spheres; (5) high-pressure compression and low-temperature calorimetry; (6) the static determination of Poisson's ratio.
