Abstract : The mode theory of very low frequency radio propagation is adapted to determine (1) the electric and magnetic fields in a plane-stratified anisotropic incompressible ionosphere model with arbitrary static magnetic field in each stratum, and (2) the polarization of the electric field penetrating into the earth, both due to a distant VLF transmitter on the surface of the earth. The earth-ionosphere guide is assumed to be spherical and to support quasi TM and TE modes. The procedure for determining the signals in the ionosphere model for a given mode is analogous to the calculation for a non-uniform transmission line and employs transmission and admittance matrices relating the field components tangential to the stratum boundaries. The required matrices are no larger than 2 by 2 elements in size, thus facilitating simple and rapid computation. Computer programs to implement these calculations are briefly described. (Author)
