Abstract : The mode theory of very low frequency radio propagation is adapted to determine (1) the electric and magnetic fields in a planestratified anisotropic incompressible ionosphere model with arbitrary static magnetic field in each stratum, and (2) the polarization of the electric field penetrating into the earth, both due to a distant VLF transmitter on the surface of the earth. The earthionosphere guide is assumed to be spherical and to support quasi TM and TE modes. The procedure for determining the signals in the ionosphere model for a given mode is analogous to the calculation for a nonuniform transmission line and employs transmission and admittance matrices relating the field components tangential to the stratum boundaries. The required matrices are no larger than 2 by 2 elements in size, thus facilitating simple and rapid computation. Computer programs to implement these calculations are briefly described. (Author)
