Abstract : Ground state S atoms have been detected by means of their paramagnetic resonance spectrum among the products of a reaction of H2S with discharged wet H2. From a chemical standpoint, production of S atoms in detectable amounts is important for studies of room temperature reactions involving this species. The spectrum itself is of interest because of the test of atomic wave functions which would be provided by a theoretical calculation of the slight deviations of the observed atomic g factors from the Lande value. The S atom spectrum is similar to that of O atoms. Identification of the S atom spectrum was based on the agreement of the observed g factors with the predicted elementary Lande value of 1.5, the agreement of the observed second order Zeeman splittings with the calculated splittings, and the agreement of the relative intensities of the J=1 and J=2 lines with those calculated for a room temperature Boltzman distribution of atoms in the 3P1 and 3P2 levels.
