Abstract : Progress is reported on coatings for the protection of tantalum-base alloys from oxidation at temperatures of 1650 to 2200 C. The following metals were oxidizer under various conditions: Hf-25 Ta alloy; Hf1Ni alloy; Hf3Ni alloy; reactor and spectrographic grades of Hf; Thoriated and unalloyed W; Ir30Rh alloy; Ir30Pt alloy; Unalloyed Ir. Alloy additions of Rh and Pt appeared to improve the oxidation resistance of Ir which, even in the unalloyed condition, demonstrated a resistance to the ingress of oxygen greater than the resistance of the Hf-25Ta alloy for oxidation in flowing dry air. Diffusional compatibility studies were made for the Hf-HfO2 and Ir-W systems and accidentally for the Ir-ThO2 system. The incipient melting points (solidus temperature) of the Ir30Rh and Ir30Pt alloys were determined. (Author)
