Abstract : The rate of oxygen recombination on cadmium was determined in 34 cells with different separators and negative electrodes. The rate was insufficient to prevent pressure buildup on overcharge. Screening tests of various auxiliary (oxygen) electrodes, yielded two (YEC-Pt and Amer. Cyanamid AB-X) which are being incorporated in cells. Silver impregnated nickel plaque electrodes for operation on the AgO level only were investigated by means of a factorial experiment. Utilization of Ag on the AgO level only was low. Sixteen cells for operation on the Ag2) level only were built, formed, sealed and started on evaluation cycling. The discharge voltage, capacity and exchange time were determined for 34 cells of a factorial experiment designed to establish the best separator, negative electrode and electrode area. Charge control systems were selected for argentous and two-level operation. (Author)
