Abstract : A rail accelerator was used to produce a high-Mach-number, current-conducting plasma, and slender cylindrical probes were placed transverse to the free stream to detect the arrival of the current sheet. It was determined that qualitative measurements of the plasma front velocity could be made in this manner. Also, by use of high speed photography, it was determined that there was strong interaction between the probe and the plasma free stream. The interaction phenomena appeared to be in the form of a hypersonic shock. It was tentatively concluded that a Knudsen number based on long-range coulomb interactions must be used to explain the observed phenomena. (AUTHOR)
