Abstract : The paper discusses the principle of measuring the power of the output radiation from a laser using a germanium photodiode. The properties of the germanium photodiode and calibration of the photodiode using the radiation flux from a perfect black body at a temperature of 1000 K are discussed. Measurement of the radiation flux from a He-Ne gas laser is discussed in detail and formulas and a graph are given which make it possible to measure radiation power of a laser at any wavelength within the range from 0.6 to 1.7 microns. The paper also gives a number of practical comments concerning the choice of photodiodes suitable for such measurements and discusses briefly the possibility of measuring the radiation power from a ruby laser.
