Abstract : A technique was developed to compute the optimum terminal control for a space vehicle which can be described by linear differential equations with bounded amplitude control inputs. The optimal control and optimal terminal state are associated with the minimum value of the cost function. An iteration procedure is developed whereby a sequence of the subsets of the reachable set are generated such that the sequence converges to a subset containing the optimal terminal state. The point in each subset and a corresponding control yielding a minimum value for the cost function are obtained along with the terminal subset. The optimization processes on the various subsets are far simpler than the optimization of the original continuous system. An example of a third order system is included for illustration. The particular value of this technique is the relative simplicity of the computations required. These computations could be performed by current airborne computers in space mission application.
