Abstract : The general problem of finding the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix, with the aid of a digital computer, is investigated. Primary emphasis is placed on the description of methods by which the given matrix is reduced to diagonal, triangular, tridiagonal or Hessenberg form, the latter two cases requiring an additional stage of computation to find the eigenvalues. Comparisons are made between competing techniques with respect to stability, accuracy, and speed of computation. (Author)
