Abstract : Studies of the chemically driven shocked xenon laser pumping source during this reporting period have resulted in the following observations: (1) anomalous spiking of ruby laser output appears to be due to a bending vibration of the crystal induced by the shock wave; (2) the transverse coupling geometry sometimes results in crystal damage; (3) studies of the coaxial coupling geometry should be resumed; (4) the overall efficiency of the chemical pumping source as developed to date falls short of the performance offered by batteries, but shows promise of becoming competitive.
