Abstract : The contribution of water and ice clouds to zenith sky temperatures in the frequency range from 10 to 100 gc is calculated using reasonable models. It is shown that radiation due to absorption by water vapor and cloud droplets may contribute from 1 to over 200 K to the apparent sky temperature. Scattering from cloud droplets is of negligible importance over the frequency range considered. A cloud droplet size distribution of the form ar to the 6th power exp(-br) is used in the calculations. The droplet radius is critical because of the r to the 3rd power and r to the 6th power variation respectively in the absorption and scattering cross sections. (Author)
