Abstract : The collision factor in the BhatnagarGrossKrook equation, the BGK equation, is evaluated in comparison with the collision integral in the Boltzmann equation. The deviation of the BGK collision factor from the Boltzmann collision integral increases as the Knudsen number increases and the deviation of the state of a gas from thermal equilibrium becomes significant. An attempt is made to rationalize the status of the BGK equation as a physical law. (Author)
