Abstract : Wind data at Green River, Utah occasionally show a significant maximum in the speed profile below 5000 feet above the ground. The maximum sometimes occurs under near-adiabatic lapse rate conditions. The development is a nocturnal phenomenon but may persist until near midmorning. The height of this sharp peak in the wind speed profile over the mountainous terrain of the area appears to be somewhat greater and the speed of lesser magnitude than have been observed previously in data from the area of the Great Plains of the United States.
