Abstract : The response of a multi-story frame structure to random excitation is evaluated under the assumption that the structure can be treated as an idealized shear beam with particular damping properties that make the modal analysis possible. Two types of nonstationary random process are assumed for the input. In one case, the input process is derived by differentiation from a process that is the product of a stationary Gaussian process and a deterministic function of time, whereas in the other, the input is a filtered Poisson process. The probability that specified levels of stress in the columns of the frame will be exceeded, is introduced as a possible measure of safety with respect to random loading. (Author)
