Abstract : The purpose of this program is to investigate new types of cold cathodes which seem to possess a number of advantages over other types of emitters in terms of emission density, effective emitting area, velocity spread, and stability of operation. The purpose of the current year's effort is to define some of the basic parameters governing the performance of these emitters and to investigate the mechanisms important to their operation. To this end it is the purpose of this project to investigate: the emission density, efficiency, and stability of thin film sandwiches and recombination photocathodes; the velocity distribution and the uniformity of the electron beams originating from such cathodes, and, in particular, the physical parameters involved such as the energy losses involved in the transmission of electrons through thin metal and insulating films, efficiency of recombination radiation, emission density and efficiency of photoemissive materials, vacuum barriers, and energy structures.
