Abstract : This report discusses the results of a program to compare mechanical properties and economics of electron beam welds in thick sections with arc welding processes. Single pass butt welds were made in 1.0-in. plates of Ti-6Al-4V, Rene 41, 18NiCoMo maraging steel, HP-9-Ni-4Co steel, 15-7Mo-Ph stainless steel and 1.5-in. 7075 aluminum plate. Two pass butt welds were made in 1.5- and 1.75-in. plates of Ti-6Al-4V, Rene' 41, 18NiCoMo maraging steel and HP-9Ni-4Co steel. The weldments were evaluated for quality, tensile strength and fracture toughness. In addition, Rene' 41 and Ti-6Al-4V weldments were evaluated for stress rupture properties. Sound single pass welds were produced in Ti-6Al-4V. Single pass welds in Rene' 41 contained a small amount of microcracks. Single pass welds in 18NiCoMo maraging steel and HP-9Ni-4Co steel were prone to cold shuts at the root of the joint. The weld in 15-7Mo-Ph stainless steel contained porosity and the weld in 7075 aluminum contained small shrinkage cracks at the root. Two pass welds made were prone to cold shuts at the tip of the fusion zone of the second pass or cracking. The ability to weld mismatched joints was demonstrated. Repair weld passes were prone to cold shuts. The feasibility of making welds at an initial chamber pressure of 0.001 mm Hg rather than the normal initial chamber pressure of 0.0001 mm Hg was established. (Author)
