Abstract : The effects of viscoelasticity and material ablation on the vibratory response of a long hollow cylinder are investigated. The cylinder is subjected to a time-dependent internal pressure. For step internal pressure, explicit solutions are presented for the circumferential stress at the eroding inner surface and for the displacement in radial direction. It is found that due to ablation, the instantaneous frequency decreases and the displacement amplitude increases. The increase in amplitude is counteracted by viscoelastic damping. In the analysis it is assumed that the material is incompressible in bulk and viscoelastic in shear according to the standard linear solid. (Author)
