Abstract : The objective of this program is to demonstrate the performance of prototype instrumentation systems under conditions closely simulating the operation of a journal bearing lubricated with liquid potassium. Studies of the components of the film-thickness transducer revealed that the original cupcake-coil design appears most suitable for operation in the tungsten carbide sleeve. The influence of the tungsten carbide on the character of the output signal from the coil, however, may make circuit inductance a more sensitive and less ambiguous indicator of film thickness than circuit Q. Villari-effect materials are being considered for the pressure-transducer core. Two core geometries have been evaluated, one having a bobbin shape and the other the general shape of a darning-needle eye. Construction of preliminary film-thickness transducers will be continued for study of the electrical behavior at elevated temperatures in the bearing-simulation facility.
