Abstract : A structural theory of visco-plasticity, appropriate for thin plates, is developed and used to obtain the solution for symmetric bending of a thin circular plate made of a rigid, incompressible, visco-plastic material. The plate is simply supported along its entire edge and subjected to a uniformly distributed transverse load. The onset of visco-plastic flow is specified by the von Mises yield condition for a perfectly plastic plate. The results obtained are compared with a solution based on a linearized theory of visco-plasticity, in which the Tresca piecewise linear yield condition for a perfectly plastic plate is assumed to specify the onset of visco-plastic flow. The linearized theory is found to provide a good approximation provided the applied load is not very much greater than the yield point load for a perfectly plastic plate. Solutions based on the Tresca yield loci which inscribe and circumscribe the von Mises yield curve do not bound the solution based on the von Mises yield condition. (Author)
