Abstract : Attempts to produce L-forms of fungi were unsuccessful. Examination of the biosynthetic pathway to ornithine in 2 L-forms and their parent bacteria, two yeasts and seven Mycoplasma revealed a similarity between Mycoplasma, L-forms and bacteria. Likewise the mechanism of biosynthesis of lysine in Mycoplasma and bacterial L-forms is bacterial-like. Preliminary studies on the nature of forces binding membrane subunits together to form the cytoplasmic membrane of Mycoplasma indicate involvement of both hydrophobic and ionic bonds. (Author)
