Abstract : This report covers the first phase of the development of an X-band triode cavity oscillator capable of giving 300 mw of continuous-wave power output and covering a frequency range of 8,850 GHz to 9,170 GHz with Single shaft tuning. The design of a triode (Y-1613-A) from which the first sample tubes will be constructed is derived from an idealized structure. Cross-sectional drawings of the idealized structure and the Y-1613-A are shown. The Y-1613-A design has an annular cathode of 0.120 in. OD X .050 in. ID, with an active area of .056 sq cm. The anode face will also be annular. An etched grid support structure having grid wire support ribs will provide the necessary mechanical strength. A heater power of less than two watts will give the required cathode temperature. The anode dissipation could be as high as 15 watts, because of the anticipated plate efficiency of 3 to 4%, and heat flow calculations are included to show that the temperature differential between the anode face and the heat sink can be held to 120 C. A drawing of a proposed cavity shows a reversed, re-entrant circuit with slot coupling to X-band Wave-guide. All tube elements are electrically insulated from ground, and a proposed tuning arrangement is included. (Author)
