Abstract : Confirmatory Test (type I) of Code A Retrofitted Recovery Vehicle Full-Tracked: Light, Armored, M578 was conducted to determine suitability of vehicles for issue and adequacy of quality control improvements and modifications. The test was performed at Fort Knox, Kentucky from 9 December 1965 to 22 March 1966 on vehicle, serial no. 12AY95. Findings, based on 2,060 miles of operation reveal that 6 deficiencies experienced in previous tests have not been satisfactorily corrected, and 15 new deficiencies were reported. It was concluded that: Code A, Retrofitted, Recovery Vehicle, as tested, was unsuitable for issue for Army use; 6 deficiencies determined in previous tests have not been satisfactorily corrected by the retrofit program; however, they appear to be readily correctable; 15 new deficiencies were revealed of which 12 appear to result from poor quality control, and all appear to be readily correctable; the level wind device was suitable in performance, durability, and reliability. It was recommended that: determination be made of the cause for the unusually high number of torsion bar failures, and considerations be given to replacement in existing vehicles by attrition; Code A, Retrofitted Recovery Vehicle, Full-Tracked: Armored, M578 not be issued for Army use until all other deficiencies and as many shortcomings as feasible listed in appendix 2 are corrected; and tow winch level wind device be incorporated in M578 vehicles prior to issue to trooops.
