Abstract : Methyl iodide was photolyzed in the presence of NO at room temperature. Iodine is both a primary and secondary product. Nitrosomethane is a primary product, while (CH3NO)2, NO2, CH3ONO, N2, and N2O are secondary products, and CH3ONO2, CH2O, and HNO2 are tertiary products. The complete reaction sequence is given. Methyl iodide enters the chain step to give CH3O radicals. The important steps in removing CH3NO are: 2CH3NO yielding (CH3NO)2 and CH3NO + NO yielding CH3O + N2O. The rate constants for both reactions were obtained and are tabulated with several other rate constants. Where comparisons could be made with existing results, agreement was good. (Author)
