Abstract : Dicarboxylic acids absorb in the infrared region below 1/700 cm. Their spectra depend on the physical state in which they are observed and the chemical structure between the carboxyl groups. Characteristic frequencies for particular structures appear between 1/720 cm and 1/580 cm in mull spectra. In solution spectra the characteristic bands appear between 1/680 cm and 1/580 cm. The characteristic frequencies diminish as numbers of carbon atoms in the chain between the carboxyl groups increase. Substitution on and unsaturation in the dicarboxylic acid chain raise the frequencies. The absorptivity from solution spectra decreases linearily with increasing number of carbon atoms for oxalic through glutaric acid. Substitution on the main carbon chain of the dicarboxylic acid and the presence of unsaturation in the chain increase the absorptivity. The absorptivities are as characteristic of structure between the carboxyl groups as the frequencies. They are more characteristic for some structures. (Author)
