Abstract : This report on halogen passivation studies covers the research accomplished during the period from 1 February 1966 to 30 April 1966. Apparent fluoride film thicknesses have been measured on ten alloy powders. The thickness of fluoride films formed by exposure to chlorine trifluoride vapor was determined by measuring the weight increase of the powder samples, while a volumetric method was used to determine the film thickness formed by exposure to fluorine gas. All measurements were near room temperature. The effect of fluorine pressure on the apparent film thickness was determined for nickel powder over the pressure range from 100 to 1100 torr. Effects of atmospheric moisture on fluoride films on nickel and monel were investigated. Polarization measurements in bromine trifluoride were carried out for nickel, Monel, and stainless steel 316 electrodes. (Author)
