Abstract : The dispersion curve of the 0.030 inch period helix coupled vane (HCV) circuit has been corrected with the extention of the passband from 4.8 Gc to 12.1 Gc. This results in an operating range from 1.28 to 2.62 radians per cell over the 7 Gc to 11 Gc frequency range. Interaction impedance measurements made with this circuit indicate that this parameter varies from 50 ohms at 7 Gc to 8 ohms at 11 Gc. Matches to this new slow wave circuit have now achieved approximately 18 db return loss over most of the frequency range of interest. With the complete tube simulated, this reduces to approximately 12 db return loss over the 7.5 Gc to 11 Gc range. Hot tests of the reentrant injected beam technique resulted in up to 16 db of net gain. However, efficiency remained poor. This approach has been limited by secondary emission from the sole. Results with the conventional reentrant emitting sole technique indicate that improved performance can be expected over the entire frequency range with programmed interaction spacing. New circuits for operation to lower beta regions have been designed. These should substantially increase the low level performance and flatten the gain versus frequency characteristic.
