Abstract : A large number of interstitial compounds and alloys with the NaCl crysttl structure have been prepared and their superconducting behavior examined. It is shown that many alloyed interstitial compounds not only exhibit transition temperatures close to 18 K but are also capable of carrying a useful supercurrent density at high magnetic fields. It is concluded that the major hope of raising the transition temperatures of interstitial compounds rests largely on the feasibility of obtaining materials with compositions close to the stoichiometric value. Several empricial formulae that relate transition temperatures to simple physical quantities have been evaluated in terms of the new experimental data and shown to be only partially successful in systematizing interstitial compounds. A specific heat calorimeter is described and measurements of NbN0.87 compared with the findings of other investigators. Good agreement is found. In particular the trend of increasing transition temperature with increased sample stoichiometry is confirmed.
