Abstract : Methods are presented for broadening the range of physical phenomena which can be described in fireball calculations. Theoretical descriptions of retardation effects and Compton scattering are developed in a form suitable for numerical solution of the radiation-transport equation and the associated numerical approximations are discussed. Preliminary applications to test problems of these descriptions are also reported. A theoretical basis is presented for including the effects of the nonequilibrium chemical composition of low-temperature air in the description of the fireball precursor. A numerical method for including these chemical effects in a fireball calculation is described. Preliminary work on the radiative structure of a strong shock is reported. (Author)
