Abstract : To perform a detailed structural analysis of a solar collector fabricated from a honeycomb-type structure, sufficient statistical design data must be developed to provide a degree of confidence and quality in the design parameters selected. Additionally, because of a unique solar collector design concept, certain design data must be generated which are specific to the application of the honeycomb material in the design concept. The application of a specific honeycomb material was analyzed in reference to a solar collector orbital flight-test system; a test plan was prepared which included structural tests to provide data for design considerations, and the structural tests were accomplished. Ultrasonic inspection of the test specimen bonds was made before all tests, and after those tests which were applicable. Statistical design data were obtained, where appropriate, and additional data were developed for design purposes that were specific to the proposed use of the honeycomb material. The ultrasonic inspection method, at least on one specimen, tended to verify bond voids which were indicated in a torsional creep-rupture test.
