Abstract : A unified approach for the approximate solution of boundary value problems by undetermined parameters is presented. It is demonstrated how the general technique reduces to the well known method or Ritz, Galerkin, least-squares, collocations, Mikhlin, and point matching, as well as some new methods. Two examples from plate bending theory and one from steady-state heat conduction are treated numerically by various methods to demonstrate their application. Based on detailed results, comparisons are made among the methods as to accuracy, ease of application, and over-all applicability. Applications to digital computers are discussed. (Author)
