Abstract : Specimens of fully dense, polycrystalline magnesium oxide obtained from a single hot-pressed disk were tested for fracture strength in bending. Careful observations of microstructure revealed no variable which could account for the observed fracture strength scatter. With uniform microstructure and with careful handling to insure that each specimen was as identical to every other, insofar as possible, it was concluded that the method of testing introduced the primary uncontrolled variables. Therefore, the strength scatter is assumed to be related more to the uncertainties in the test than to variations in the specimens. (Author)
