Abstract : This report describes the results of a fourteen month development program on the SFD-226 X-band crossed-field amplifier, designed for phased array application. The basic tube specification required 100 kw minimum peak power output at a 1% duty cycle over the frequency band of 8.5 Gc to 9.5 Gc. The tube is operated directly from a dc power supply of 12 kv maximum, with self-triggered RF turn on and control electrode turn off. The purpose of that program was to conduct studies for the modification of the existing SFD-214 crossed-field amplifier. The following results were obtained from that study: control electrode turn off was demonstrated at X-band, using two different control electrode geometries; a 200 hour life test was completed on a tube operating at 100 kw peak power output with control electrode turn off; dc hold off and field distribution studies yielded geometries with dc breakdown voltages greater than 25 kv; broad band, forward wave circuits were examined; these circuits were space harmonic versions of the fundamentally backward wave, choke supported interdigital line.
