Abstract : A study is made of the problem of an acoustic pressure pulse propagated thermally stratified water with a vertical gradient in the propagation velocity. A review of the method of obtaining a formal solution of the wave equation inside the shadow zone is given. The transformation of this solution is presented in a form which results in a residue series or branch integral. An asymptotic form developed by Towne and Wilson for one velocity distribution is included to obtain an integral which makes a computer solution possible. Finally, a discussion is given of several other techniques which might allow a more direct solution to problems of this type. (Author)
