Abstract : Neutron diffraction patterns were obtained at room temperature from two austenitic manganese steels, one with a carbon content of 1.23 wt% and the other 0.63 wt%. Analysis of the data showed in an unequivocal manner that the carbon atoms occupy the octahedral site. If any of the carbon is in the tetrahedral site, the concentration is too small to be detected by neutron diffraction. The design, construction, and testing of the infrared microscope is also described. It has been demonstrated that the present version of the microscope has the required temperature sensitivity and resolution, but the response time must be reduced before it can be utilized to study phase transformations. In view of the results of this research, it is evident that the use of diffusion couples to determine the phase boundaries of constitutional diagrams can yield compositions which differ significantly from the equilibrium values; equilibrated samples must be used to obtain accurate values of the solubility limits.
