Abstract : During the past reporting period, Phase 2 of the subject contract sommenced and progress was made in all task areas. In evaluating current design, high-temperature ceramic-to-metal seals were tested; magnetic field effects on the flow of working fluid in heat pipes were investigated; and heat pipe wick structures of various materials, pore sizes, and thicknesses were tested. In the area of electrode improvement, oxygen sources for the enhancement of converter performance were evaluated. Testing of insulated emitters continued and from tabulated results, optimum layer thickness was approximated. Use of the heat pipe as a heat source for testing emitter insulation samples was planned. A superiour design was achieved for an integrated heat pipe-thermionic module and improved electron-beam welding techniques were tested for use on this assembly. The heat pipe to be used with the three-converter module was fabricated as well as other subassemblies and parts of the integrated unit. (Author)
